Description

Aldon's Locomotive Chocking Skate is a cast steel railroad skate built for use on exposed rail track on flat surfaces. At 12 lbs. and 17½" long, it's a practical option for chocking locomotives where space is tight. The low-profile 4" handle is designed to clear wheel frames and brake shoe obstructions. Compatible with rail sizes 90 to 155 lbs/yd and wheels with a minimum 28" diameter, this skate requires clean rail surfaces and must always be used with locomotive air and hand brakes applied.

  • Locomotive air and hand brake must be applied as soon as wheel has mounted skate. The skate alone will not hold a locomotive steady.
  • Not recommended for grades, as skate may not hold the load.
  • Skates are also available in flush rail models: 4016-09-L and 4016-09-R
  • Weight: 12 lbs.

Safe Use of Product

  1. For use on exposed rail track only. Skate will not lie flat on rail that is encased in pavement.
  2. For rail sizes 90 to 155 lbs/yd
  3. For use on flat track only. Not recommended for grades, as the skate may not be able to hold the load.
  4. Rail surface must be clean. Greasy rail can cause a skate to slide too freely.
  5. Minimum wheel diameter 28”.
  6. All workers and bystanders must stand well clear of sides and front of railcar or locomotive when wheels are mounting skates. Wheel pressure can suddenly “squeeze” a skate out from under with great force.
  7. Never use rail skates if one end of the railcar or locomotive is lifted up for inspection or repair. All wheels must remain on the rails.
  8. Replace skate if tongue is broken or curled.

Special Caution for Chocking Railcars

Roll car slowly up on the skate. Apply car brakes. It may be necessary to install a steel wheel chock at the other end of the car, depending on track conditions.
