Close Clearance Signs

Passing trains do not always leave enough room for workers to ride on the side or top of cars. To comply with Federal Railroad Administration rules, “each railroad shall implement procedures that enable employees to identify clearance points and a means to identify locations where clearance points will not permit a person to safely ride on the side of a car.” As noted in OSHA 1917.17(o): “Warning signs shall be posted if insufficient clearance for personnel exists between railcars and structures.”

Advise workers in advance of any potential dangers to avoid injuries and mark locations accordingly.
